Play Football for Life

Pilot Programme 2009-2010

The pilot programme was implemented between May 2009 and May 2010 in Rustenburg, South Africa.

A 10-hour Life Skills course spread across 6 weeks and run in schools formed the foundation of the programme. After each football training exercise the children were brought back together and asked to apply the lessons they learned from training to life. For example, understanding the importance of a goal in football is easy but what about the need for having goals in life? To score a goal in football you have to beat the defenders and the goalkeeper but what obstacles do you have to overcome in life to achieve your goals? How do you prevent HIV infection becoming your biggest obstacle in life? These are just some of the many questions explored during the Life Skills course.

2,831 children were involved in Play Football For Life (PFL) in Rustenburg over the year and graduated through a World Cup style tournament, receiving cups and medals to mark their effort.

"The learning outcomes are wonderful, I cannot even describe...I have seen learners take charge of their own lifestyle."
Principal of Abana Primary School

"I think by doing this using football they understand more than when we talk to them, because it is practical, they can see it."
A teacher at Tshirologang Primary School

“This is exceptional. The children enjoy their lessons tremendously. They do not just play, they are taught challenging skills and the ladies who teach are also of the best quality.”
