Football For Life
Play Football for Life is a remarkable programme which One to One Children’s Fund is supporting through our partner Africaid- Whizzkids United. The aim of the programme is to create an AIDS-free generation through a unique approach centred around the game of football, an already hugely popular sport within Africa as a whole. Through the language of football the children involved are educated on both the dangers of HIV/AIDS as well as life skills in general in an attempt to bring about positive behavioural changes. The programme is aimed equally at boys and girls and is taught directly in schools.
One to One Children's Fund wants to reach tens of thousands of children in South Africa and beyond. The World Cup ended, and so did the focus on South Africa. But with your help, we can leave a lasting legacy that will see the new generation of young people live their lives to the full.
Rustenburg 2011
One to One Children's Fund and Whizzkids United launched the next phase of Play Football for Life in December 2010. Over 3,000 children will benefit directly from the new Play Football for Life programme in at least 8 under resourced local primary schools by December 2011.
As a pilot, Life Orientation teachers from 2 primary schools will be trained to provide the Life Skills training independently, bringing a strong sustainable element to this innovative project.
One to One Children’s Fund also brings a vital link to HIV education, treatment and care, through access to the network of PATA affiliated clinics. Young learners will be informed about the medical and psychosocial facilities offered to them, and nurses and counsellors have direct contact with the children through this programme, enabling them to reach out to families affected by HIV.
The expected learning outcomes of the PFL Life Skills programme are:
- Goal-setting, values, long-term thinking, career planning
- Gender equality, stereotypes, respect, asserting rights
- HIV/AIDS awareness, HIV testing
- Managing emotions, communication, responsibility, self-determination
- Peer pressure, drugs and alcohol, abusive situations
- Family support, choosing good friends and partners, where to get help
Eastern Cape 2012
In January 2012, we are rolling out Play Football for Life as a pilot programme in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Eight schools will participate in the first year, reaching over 1,000 children. We are implementing this in partnership with WhizzKids United and Small Projects Foundation.

"The learning outcomes are wonderful, I cannot even describe...I
have seen learners take charge of their own lifestyle."
Principal of Abana Primary School
"I think by doing this using football they understand more
than when we talk to them, because it is practical, they can see it."
