India: One to One After School CentresHaving provided basic needs such as food and clothing in devastated areas of Kerala, One to One have now developed a long-term strategy for the repair of schools and educational facilities, the after-school care of vulnerable children, the provision of clean water, and the restoration of livelihoods. In partnership with Sahayi, a local NGO, we have established child activity centres in Tamil Nadu and Allapad, Kerala, which address the nutritional, educational, social and counselling needs of 1,500 of the most vulnerable children affected by the Tsunami. This programme became fully sustainable in December 2008 and the Charity now provides reduced financial support to Sahayi for the extension of its activities. Child and Youth Development ProgrammeThe project was supported by One To One Children's Fund to help children and students reduce stress and social stigma, and develop their capacity to address future issues. Strengthening of Children’s Assemblies and Parliament In the Alappad Panchayat Sahayi organized 15 children Assemblies and one children’s parliament to help them practise value based democracy at grassroots level. During the period several rounds of Assembly meetings were conducted in all the 15 wards of Alappad Panchayat. Around 1000 children regularly participated in these meetings. The children also engaged in a variety of action programmes to improve environmental hygiene. They conducted 10 programmes for cleaning the premises of school, anganwadies and other public places Capacity Building Programmes for Children/Youth Leaders In order to help children/youth to improve their leadership qualities, increase their understanding of group dynamics, convening meetings, recording documentation and to learn the values of cooperation, sharing and living together a series of training programmes were organised . Facilitating Learning through the library and resource centre The library facilities and books in each CRCs was offered to the children in each locality throughout the period. Several children made use of these services for reading, preparing projects and information gathering. The adults and elders also regularly visited the centre for reading newspapers and watching news on television. Child/Student/Youth Recreation Programme ![]() |
