14 Super-Athletic Fundraisers Conquer The
London Triathlon 2011
On Saturday 30th July and Sunday 31st July, One to One Children’s Fund’s most athletic supporters united to take on the challenge of the Virgin Active London Triathlon 2011, the world’s largest triathlon, raising an amazing £8500 in sponsorship for the Charity.
Fortunately for our teams, the days were warm, dry and sunny and hoards of supporters descended on the ExCel Centre to line the race route and cheer on the competitors. Saturday saw the One to One Children’s Fund teams go head-to- head in the fast-paced Team Relay event. Each team member took on a different leg of the triathlon, kicking off with a swim in the London Docklands, a cycle past Big Ben and finally, a run alongside Canary Wharf.
One to One Children’s Fund Chairman, David Altschuler was joined by an energetic Kerry Stares and keen swimmer Lauren Matus (who has completed not one, not two but three swimming events during July in the delightfully murky waters of the Royal Victoria Docks and the River Thames for the Charity). Australia’s own Eddie Marshbaum with Tim Graham and Jonathon Raymond aimed to complete the race in ‘record time’ and, while we don’t know about time barriers, we do know that they set a record standard for team spirit and heroic fundraising efforts.
We were also delighted to have two teams from Future Films; an all male team comprising of avid cyclist and all-round challenge enthusiast Ben Stapleton, runner Kwesi Dickman and cyclist Reece Lipman and an all female team comprising of team leader Avni Thakrar, cyclist Stella Arenillas and runner Elisa Alvares who all succeeded in completing their very first Triathlon, no mean feat! Sunday was the turn of the individual triathletes, Laurence Marshbaum and Brett Schlesinger, whose tough physical preparations saw them both completing the Olympic Distance race in impressive times, under the three hour mark.
A huge thank you must be said to all our competitors that were involved and to everyone that supported them throughout their training and through their generous donations. The income raised through this event will go a significant way in supporting the children suffering from poverty, disease and conflict that we work with through our projects around the world. The day was such a success – watch this space for London Triathlon 2012!
