SMS Lifeline

One to One Children’s Fund and our South African partner, the Small Projects Foundation, have partnered with technology provider Greenmash to design an SMS web-based solution to:

  • Improve the coordination of community based health services. There are often long distances between the clinic/hospital sites and the communities and limited resources to contribute to travel costs. Poor communication makes it difficult for CHWs to request timely acute care for patients in the community, and these healthcare workers often have to spend a significant proportion of their modest salaries either on transport between clinic and community, or buying phone credit to reach and report to their clinic supervisors.
  • Limited clinic and health care staff access often results in non-adherence in both children and adolescents. Adherence is essential to the treatment of all HIV/AIDS positive people, as defaulting can result in resistance to ARVs and thereby become a death sentence. Facilitating easy communication between CHWs and clinics will save lives.
  •  Collect timely quantitative HIV/AIDS statistics, accessible to key Programme stakeholders. The availability of timely health statistics will enable:

Clinic and hospital staffs to better understand and manage both their HIV/AIDS case load and the impact of CHWs

  • One to One Children’s Fund, SPF and the South African Government to analyze the effectiveness of the ART Support Programme track the disease efficiently and present donors with credible statistics

This exciting project will be piloted at three hospitals and their satellite clinics in the Eastern Cape, South Africa and is expected to begin at the end of 2011.
